The apparent delay may have been due to a revamp of Skype, a new version of which launched this summer.“Cortana can detect when you’re talking about scheduling events or things you have to do and will recommend setting up a reminder, which you will receive on all your devices that have Cortana enabled,” Microsoft announced in a blog post. The feature is similiar to services offered by Facebook in its Messenger service, and Google in its Allo app.Users can also choose to message Cortana and have “natural conversations in one-on-one chats” covering information including weather forecasts, flight status, stock quotes and restaurant recommendations. Egnor: A Couple of Problems with Ape “Spirituality”

first_imgCongratulations to Science Magazine for an Honest Portrayal of Darwin’s Descent of Man Requesting a (Partial) Retraction from Darrel Falk and BioLogos Contemplating a journalist’s claim that apes have “spiritual” experiences, neuroscientist Michael Egnor notes a couple of problems. Writing at Mind Matters, he points out that spirituality is necessarily about a reality abstract from our concrete experiences, the spiritual realm. All animals experience heightened emotions, but those all have to do with the concrete reality around them. No research indicates abstract thought on the part of apes or any other non-human creature. That’s not surprising since animals lack language, which is the prerequisite to contemplating abstractions.Egnor:All animals — human and non-human — experience joy and sadness, and all animals have access to the full range of perceptual and emotional experience. Animal perception and emotion may, at times, resemble human contemplation of abstract concepts but it is merely a resemblance; animal experience remains bound to particular things in the animal’s perceptual experience. Abstraction is beyond the reach of animal minds, because abstraction is an immaterial power of the mind, and only humans have immaterial thoughts. Only humans contemplate spiritual things.Read the rest here. It’s an important reality-check, but of course assertions about ape “spirituality” aren’t about seeking an accurate picture of reality, of the real world and what goes on in it. They are an attempt to knock humans off our exceptional perch and teach us a lesson: That we’re not special after all. The wish to demote, punish, and degrade ourselves this way, a neurosis special to our modern culture, is itself, ironically, a tribute to human exceptionalism. No other animals could be this crazy.Photo credit: Zeno Verschaeve via Unsplash. Omarion Davis, a man on a mission

first_imgJamaica College (JC) continues to reaffirm its status as one of the top teams entering this year’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships by cultivating talent such as the likes of Omarion Davis. Committed and determined are a few words to describe this upcoming athlete. Now in his second year of Class Three, Davis shared why he should be viewed this season as a man on a mission. Outside of running, do you have any other interests? Yes, I play football. I like to play a lot of games. Sometimes I will read interesting books likeDiary of a Wimpy Kid and those types of books. What subjects do you enjoy in high school? Math because I have a connection with it. I don’t know why. It is just really good to and it is fun. What type of music do you listen to and what is your favourite song? I like listening to love songs because they keep me calm all the time. Any artiste that has good songs, I will listen to it, like Jonas Blue’s ‘Polaroid.’ What advice do you have for other students who want to achieve the same level of success? Always work hard. Never back down from any challenge and always balance your schoolwork because that is the most important thing. How do you balance your athletic life and academic studies? Every time after training, I would usually go and do my homework, try to read up some notes every time when I come from school, before I go to training and after training. What are you most proud of in your athletics career and how do you feel running for your school? Running for JC, and I feel really good because a lot of first formers back at school look up to me and they respect me, and apparently I inspire them a lot. David Salmon: Why did you start doing track and field? Omarion Davis: You know, I do not know. I just run. I ran at Sports Day and my PE teacher told me to come and do tracks and everybody else in grade six told me to do tracks, so I went and that is how I started to do tracks. Why did you decide to focus on 1500m and 800m? Because back in Class Four, I used to run 400m and apparently I was not fast enough in 400m. My coach made me run an 800m because of punishment and I came first and third overall at a track meet, so that is how I started running 800m. When I started Class Three last year, my distance coach thought it would have been better if he tried me out in the 1500m. Apparently, I was good so yeah. What goals do you have for the season? To come first or second at Champs this year in, both the 800m and 1500m. Which athlete do you consider your greatest inspiration? I would say Usain Bolt. What qualities do you possess that best enable you to be successful? I always work hard. I am always dedicated and I never back down from any challenge. What career goals do you have, and why? I would like to become a rescue pilot, or a commercial pilot, or a soldier because they interest me. They keep me busy. Who is your favourite footballer and why? Neymar, because he is always dedicated, always want to score goals; always wants to be the best. Who has supported you during this time and what is their impact on you? My family. They always keep me going and always motivate me.last_img read more

FIFA bans former official for life

first_imgZURICH (AP):FIFA has imposed a life ban on a former member of its ethics committee who helped judge other football officials while himself taking bribes.Ariel Alvarado received at least US$230,000 (almost J$31 million) in bribes linked to marketing deals, for World Cup qualifying games and the Gold Cup from 2009 to 2011, while he was a member of FIFA’s ethics committee, football’s world body said yesterday.FIFA later appointed the Panama football federation president to its disciplinary committee.Alvarado was a member of the disciplinary panel in 2015 judging wrongdoing by others when he was indicted in a sprawling US Department of Justice investigation. He was charged with racketeering, wire fraud, and money laundering conspiracies though has yet to appear in an American court. The FIFA investigation into Alvarado used evidence “related to the jury trial that was held in the United States” two years ago, the written verdict stated. That trial at federal court in Brooklyn led to convictions for former FIFA vice-president Juan Angel Napout and José Maria Marin, who headed the 2014 World Cup organising committee in Brazil.FIFA said its ethics committee judges have banned Alvarado for life and fined him US$510,000 (over J$68 million).“In order to have a sanctioning and a preventive effect, the fine should be higher than the benefit Mr Alvarado obtained as otherwise, it would only amount to a reclaiming of the respective benefit,” the FIFA judges said.last_img read more
