#*#*Show Fullscreen*#*# NETHERLANDS: Port of Rotterdam Authority has awarded VolkerRail the track, electrification and train protection systems contract for the Theemswegtracé freight line project. The 4·5 km line including a concrete viaduct and two steel-arch bridges across the Rozenburg lock and Thomassen Tunnel is being built to enable trains to be diverted away from the Caland Bridge road and rail vertical lift bridge. This will eliminate a bottleneck on the route between the port and the Beutwe Route freight line by avoiding conflicts with shipping movements to and from the Brittanniëhaven basin.#*#*Show Fullscreen*#*# The SaVe consortium of construction firms BESIX, Mobilis TBI, Dura Vermeer and steel compnaies Hollandia and Iemants has been undertaking major construction works for the project since September 2018. SaVe is scheduled to hand the civil works over for the installation of railway systems in mid-2020, and commissioning of the line is planned for the end of 2021.The Caland Bridge which dates from 1969 will then only be used by road traffic. The €300m project is being financed by the Port Authority, Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management and the EU. National rail infrastructure manager ProRail will be responsible for maintenance.‘Good connections to the hinterland are essential for the competitive position of the Port of Rotterdam’, said Ronald Paul, Chief Operating Officer of the port authority, when the contract with VolkerRail was signed on March 6. ‘The port railway and the Theemsweg route are of great importance for this. Better utilisation of the existing Betuwe Route is not only useful from an economic point of view – freight transport by rail is also environmentally friendly and safe.’

Liverpool fans have been given a scare ahead of their trip to Southampton. The Merseysiders will be looking to maintain their place at the top of the Premier League, but they may have to do so without Philippe Coutinho. The 24-year-old Brazilian was spotted outside a hospital in the city on Thursday, and it is believed he returned from international duty with a tight hamstring. He has six goals for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds this season and they face the prospect of lining up at St Mary’s without their star playmaker. Not only that, Adam Lallana is also a doubt after limping off with a problem during England’s draw with Spain and the former Saints midfielder will also be assessed. But the main concern is the problem with Coutinho. India’s stand-in Test captain Virat Kohli scored 66 and Murali Vijay added 60 as the tourists played out a draw in the two-day match against a Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI that concluded on Friday. The match was organised on short notice to give the Indian players some much-needed match practice ahead of the first Test against Australia which begins Tuesday at the Adelaide Oval. The four-Test series had initially been due to begin in Brisbane this week but had been rescheduled following the death of Australia batsman Phillip Hughes.Playing at the Glenelg Oval in suburban Adelaide, the Australian team batted first and scored 243 while India replied with 375 in their first innings. The Chairman’s XI was 83 for 5 in their second innings at stumps on Friday.Vijay and Kohli, who both retired to give other batsmen time in the crease, shared a 123-run stand, steadying India’s innings after the visitors were 36 for 2 late on the opening day.Vijay took one bouncer on the body that flicked up and hit the helmet, but composed himself quickly. Hughes died last Thursday, two days after being hit in the head from a short-pitched delivery during a domestic first-class match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Dan Cohen AUTHOR Fort Bragg’s 440th Airlift Wing may not be saved after all, according to members of the Air Force Reserve unit based at the installation’s Pope Field. The airmen say they expect the Air Force to announce shortly that it will inactive the wing by the end of the fiscal year, reported the Fayetteville Observer.A spokeswoman for the 440th, however, said no official announcement has come down from headquarters. The Air Force first proposed deactivating the 440th as a cost-cutting move two years ago in its fiscal 2015 budget request, but last month North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis (R) told the Observer that Air Force officials were considering a compromise that would satisfy the Army’s airborne training requirements at Fort Bragg. Tillis successfully added a provision to last year’s defense authorization bill requiring the Air Force to consult with the Army over its plan to dismantle the unit.Tillis and much of the state’s congressional delegation been fighting the Air Force’s plan say dismantling the airlift wing would hinder the ability of airborne units at the post to quickly deploy to global hotspots.“For years, bureaucrats at the Pentagon have embarked on a reckless and short-sighted pursuit to shutter the 440th Airlift Wing, even though it would negatively impact America’s Global Response Force during national emergencies,” Tillis said. “The most disappointing aspect of the Pentagon’s secretive process is how disrespectful it is to the Fayetteville community and the airborne soldiers, airmen and families at Fort Bragg who have a deep personal stake in this decision,” the senator said. The Air Force has been drawing down the number of personnel in the 440th over the past two years. Its staffing has fallen below 700 airmen and civilians, down from 1,200 earlier.
